Profile Information

Brief bio -
LINDA JANE McLEAN
Linda trained in Nursing in the 1970’s and, after working extensively in both Renal Medicine and Intensive Care, achieved the rank of Ward Sister in an Orthopaedic hospital. The ward specialised in the more complex spinal operations, such as lumbar and cervical osteotomies, and teaching formed an important part of her role. Patients came from as far afield as the Arab Emirates, so Culture and Diversity were a necessary part of Nurse Education.
She has fifteen years experience in Community Care, writing one of the first Community Care Plans in Scotland. The last five of these years were as a Care Coordinator. In this role she developed a project which delivered care and accommodation to a severely disabled and ventilated patient, assisting with the development of High Dependency/Intensive Care in the Community model.
Over the years she trained thirty staff to the requisite standard. None had a background in nursing.

EDUCATION
Registered General Nurse
Orthopaedic Nursing Certificate
Diploma in Community Care Glasgow University
Taking Care of Older Buildings: Glasgow University
Democracy and the Citizen: Glasgow University
MSc. Clinical Leadership: Glasgow University Ongoing
More recently she was trained by Strathclyde Police as a Disability Advisor. She has responded to Government Consultations individually, or as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow Lay Board.
She has worked with the “Safer Use of Medicines” Group with Greater Glasgow Health Board, and has been asked to take part in future research.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE
Social Work Department: Pilot Project: 1978-1982
For four years she took two extremely disturbed teenagers into her home, as a Professional Foster parent. Despite the children being taken respectively from a “List D” and a “Special School” they both achieved main stream schooling, and went on to further education and employment.
Initially, supporting her peer group involved listening, suggesting and problem solving. As she became more senior, she was requested to speak on a regular basis to those who wished to consider this option and to teach others who had chosen the same path.
During this period she was trained by SACRO as a Counsellor, and worked for them on a voluntary basis
Her main interest is the creation of an Empowerment Centre–where everyone contributes and patients/clients become the teachers.
Voluntary work
On a voluntary basis she has worked as Secretary to the Council of Churches, Church Elder, and frequently Church Organist.
She was fundraiser, navigator and tour nurse to a party of ninety people from a deprived area of Edinburgh who wished to present a musical extravaganza in Assisi for the World Wildlife Fund. It was a great success, and the local area basked in the reflected glory for some months.
She also organized a local epilepsy group for peer support and arranged lectures, meetings and counselling.
Today, she works closely with local voluntary groups.
Her hobbies include her dogs, writing and history.

TAKE TWO KIDS

PART ONE
Darryl the Dastardly
In many ways, we could not have been more fortunate - though it did not seem like that at the time. We had taken a huge step, and trained as professional foster carers for children over the age of 12 years, who had such a difficult personal history that no home could be found for them.

The first boy we experienced was Darryl. We had opted for boys because we were told they were easier – so, thank goodness we did not choose girls. It was not a stroll in the park, an… Continue
